Growing Microgreens in Small Places or Spaces

Updated: Feb 15

After growing a modest organic garden in my small back yard I realized I needed another way to provide healthy "greens" for my family. My wife is a breast cancer survivor and has autoimmune issues on top of that so we are always looking for foods that offer better nutrition and can actually help heal the body. In the past, I was always looking for or buying alfalfa and broccoli sprouts from our local grocer, but found hey were often not in stock or poor quality. She sent me a short reel on social media that showed me a way of growing my own sprouts. So I did that for a while cause it was so easy.... every 5 or 6 days, boom another fresh batch! Then she started consuming so much of it so I had to figure something else out.

I live in upstate NY so was over-wintering my lemon-grass and giant rosemarry plants from my garden. I ended up getting a few LED grow lights off amazon for around $40. I was while I was "shopping" different lighting options I stumbled upon indoor gardening and microgreens. Then next thing I know I'm watching tons of video on how to grow my own microgreens in my own home and the rest is history!

So to get started you don't really need a whole lot of space. We live in a modest 1,500 square foot house and have utilized my dinning room table to prep trays for growing seedlings in late winter for our back yard garden. I "cleaned out" a 3' x 2' corner in my dinning room and filled it with a simple 36" x 13.5" x 60" 4 shelf growing rack with lights I found online. The 4 rack system worked well at first but gave me limited capacity for holding 12 trays, which meant only 9 would be under the LED grow lights. I was also still "cluttering" my dinning room table because I was using it for storage. As I started gaining more clients I ended up moving that 4 rack across to the opposite corner, and replaced it with a new 36" x 18" x 72" 6 shelf rack and upgraded my grow LEDs with better quality lighting that offered the full spectrum with pink and yellow lighting to support all stages of growing. Now I have the capability of growing 24 trays of microgreens, with plenty of space for storing extra trays, seeds and other things. Having both growing rack systems rids me the trouble of taking up valuable space on my dinning room table.

So take it from me, you don't really need a whole lot of space to grow your own "greens" You just need an area that isn't cluttered, and if possible being close to an outlet so you can plug in your lights and fans is helpful too. Just think.. with a little bit of planning you too can be growing your own tiny greens in a small place or space!
